How to Choose and Wear Oud Fragrance

Your guide to wearing oud

Oud is one of the richest, most complex fragrance ingredients in the world. Whether you're new to it or building your collection, this guide covers everything you need to get started confidently.

How much oud should you apply?

Start with less than you think you need. One or two small dabs — or one to two sprays if using an eau de parfum — is enough. Oud is concentrated and projects well, so a little goes a long way. You can always add more after 20–30 minutes once you've seen how it settles on your skin.

Where to apply it: pulse points

Apply oud to your pulse points — areas where blood vessels sit close to the skin surface and gently warm the fragrance. The most effective spots are:

  • Inner wrists
  • Inside of the elbows
  • Base of the throat / neck
  • Behind the ears
  • Chest (for a deeper, more lingering effect)

Avoid rubbing your wrists together after applying — this can break down the top notes and alter how the fragrance develops.

Test on skin, not paper

Paper strips in a shop give you a general idea, but they don't tell you how a fragrance will interact with your skin chemistry. Oud especially rewards skin testing. Apply a small amount to your wrist, then wait at least 15–20 minutes before deciding. What you smell at first application (the top notes) will shift as it dries down.

How scent develops over time

Oud fragrances are built in layers — top, heart, and base notes — that reveal themselves gradually:

  • Top notes (0–15 min): The first impression — often fresh, citrus, or spiced.
  • Heart notes (15–45 min): The character of the fragrance emerges — floral, woody, smoky, or resinous.
  • Base notes (45 min onwards): The oud itself tends to anchor here, giving depth, warmth, and longevity.

Give a fragrance time before making your final call. What seems too strong initially often mellows beautifully.

Simple layering guidance

Layering means applying complementary fragrances together to build a unique scent. With oud, a common approach is:

  • Apply a lightly scented body lotion or unscented moisturiser first — hydrated skin holds fragrance longer.
  • Layer a rose or floral fragrance beneath an oud to add softness and lift.
  • Use a musk or vanilla-based scent as a base layer to make oud feel warmer and closer to the skin.

Keep layering combinations simple — two fragrances is usually enough to start.
